Yes!!!!!!!! Number 1, 4, and 6 are my favorite. We really stress those ideals when people come to brandbucket to buy as well as our approval process when people want to list a domain name. Great post.

I think another important point to consider is to check if the name is available on Twitter/Facebook. This is very important. You don't want to have a Twitter username different from your company name.

These are great tips to keep in mind, but each naming project will have its own particular issues. So a lot of it comes down to 1) priorities and 2) common sense. For an internet based business, obtaining the exacting matching .com is going to be paramount. For a service company, (i.e. plumbing, locksmith, HVAC, etc.) getting a name that starts with an "A" might be one consideration, since many are listed alphabetically. A good rule to ask at the end of any naming process is simply "Does the name accomplish our most important objectives?" Nice write up.

Don't be obsessed about a name. We really like "Unique" which was taken by several businesses in different industries. So we spelled it" Unik" which sounds a lot a eunuch and people constantly misspell which makes it hard to cash our checks. On top of that, in Spanish it makes no sense. We have been around for awhile so we can't change our names. If you can, just stick to the correct spelling.

Once you get your name, keep up on the registration. You don't want to someone to steal your great name.

I agree with most of tips except it is also good to advise when not to follow all that criteria. I am an entrepreneur and attends event called Startup Weekend where strangers gather to compete for best business they can come up out of the weekend. At events like this, I constantly run into people who argue long-hours that we should have generic name that does not limit our business in 3 to 5 years from now, in case we run this together for long time. I always tell them to just pick one that's descriptive to what we are trying to do (sometimes it's combination of plain words) over a weekend and worry about changing brand name to short and slick one later if we really want to go beyond test driving. One of my teams had a great success with simple LearnThatName.com brand name which got acquired by Gist.com few months later. In situation like this, forget about perfect name and go with the descriptive one. You gonna kill web developers the more you make them wait to buy a domain name.

The Company name should be spelling challenged. You should tell people how to change it. If it is too simple, it is easy to forget.

I don't know about business names, but I can give two rules for product names:

1. Never use a number.
2. Never name a product after something in the sky.
