Console.fm A “Turntable.fm for Twitter” Launched By HelloWorld In A Weekend

One of the latest music trends has been the rise of TurnTable.fm, which we covered previously when it first launched, which offers an easy way to be the DJ in a chat room with Facebook users. It’s kind of like a social Pandora but you can play music along with your friends via virtual chatrooms. Last week it was reported that Turntable.fm raised $7.5 million in funding. To top it off, today Turntable.fm has a nice article in the NYTimes.

Turntable.fm now has a bit of a Twitter rival in the space as this weekend the HelloWorld team, which is part of Dave McClure’s collection of 500 Startups, whipped together Console.fm in just a weekend. Console.fm offers users a place to listen to electronica music and chat with others. Users can login via Twitter sign-in which rivals Turntable.fm which you need a Facebook sign-in to login. Once inside, users can select from a variety of genres that play set playlists which utilize an algorithm to find popular tracks and play the songs from Soundcloud. Users can also chat with other users.

So just to be clear, Console.fm isn’t exactly like Turntable.fm as it only offers a select set of songs that you can play by genre rather than play anything you like. This could be considered a positive as with Turntable.fm you constantly have to have music queued up which can serve as a distraction if you are just trying to listen to some music while doing other things. Turntable.fm also offers avatars that represent you and other users in the virtual DJ world where playing a good tune can get you props and points from others who are listening. Regardless, for a weekend of development, Console.fm offers an interesting set of features that makes you want to draw the comparison to Turntable.fm. So we’ll see where this project goes, but in the meantime enjoy some tunes and conversations on Console.fm. Glow sticks not included.
