Can’t Decide on a Facebook Cover Photo? Try This App

February 15, 2012

Now that Timeline is becoming mandatory, Facebook users are scrambling – some begrudgingly – to pick cute and clever cover photos.

For the uninspired, a new Android app helps you choose cover photos that are sure to pick up some “likes.”

Facebook Timeline Covers: D33P lets you input photos from your albums, your newsfeed, or its own gallery of cover art. You can also take a photo right in the app, while previewing how it will look on your profile.

Beta launched on Christmas Eve, the app has already attracted over 50,000 downloads.

“[The new Timeline layout] allows you to do more with your own profile while still limiting people enough so it won’t turn into another mySpace layout with flashing animated gifs,” says cofounder Ricky Lui of Joy Aether, which developed the app in less than two months last fall.

Lui and his team are encouraging users to have fun with their photos; for example, “seamless mode” automatically grabs a segment from the cover photo to become the profile picture, creating one seamless image (I tried to do this manually when Timeline first came out, and it was a nightmare).

Users can also pick from D33P’s quirky cover art, including zombies or dinosaurs that inspire a frightened profile pic – as on Lui’s current Facebook page:

As you can see, photos get branded with the Android logo and “D33PAPP.COM,” but Joy Aether is planning to release a paid version with no watermark, no ads, and more filters.

Facebook Timeline Covers: D33P, somewhat clumsily named, is their second app; the first D33P app converts 2D photos to 3D. Joy Aether is based in Hong Kong, but about 80% of its users are from the United States.

The Timeline cover app is currently free; download it here.
