If you are into a distance-based outdoor sport, you have got to check out the Endomondo Sports Tracker app, which turns a mobile phone into a full-fledged personal trainer.  It can be used for running, cycling, walking, and other distance-based sports. Founded in 2007 by three former McKinsey & Company management consultants who also just happen to be athletes within different sports, the app has been downloaded over 2 million times so far. The Copenhagen-based startup will be showcasing the latest innovations of the mobile personal trainer app tomorrow at Tech Cocktail Barcelona mixer event at the Mobile World Congress 2011.

Using GPS technology, the app tracks route, distance, duration, split times, calorie consumption, and more; offers audio feedback on the performance for each mile covered; provides a full history of previous workouts, and shows route maps for each workout. On certain handsets, the app also supports integration with the built-in music player and Bluetooth heart rate monitors from Polar and Zephyr.

If you thrive on competition, you can challenge friends and share results within the Endomondo community. Simply create a profile on Endomondo’s website, which will then host personal training diaries and enable you to challenge friends.

The website even offers live tracking that allows personal fans to follow users participating in events, such as marathons, and send pep talks that are delivered via audio.  You can also schedule automatic updates to Facebook, Twitter and fundraiser pages on FirstGiving.com.

To stick with the fitness theme, the Endomondo team organized a group run meetup in Barcelona earlier this week and ran about 3.5 km near the Olympic Stadium, but you don’t have to be an Olympian athlete to join. Who’s up for another run?
