Filter and Organize Your Facebook Updates With Wisdom

Microstrategy has introduced a free Facebook app called Wisdom to help you organize your Facebook news updates. I have been testing this app for a few months, and here are some of my observations:

Wisdom gives you a way to sort and see the most popular posts on your stream by number of likes or comments; you can filter this by location, demographics and relationship.  It works: My Friend David Berkowitz posted a picture from the Great Wall of China and rightfully got 25 likes, which showed up in my stream.  The top spot in my feed went to CJ Romberger, Principal/CEO at Wildwood Interactive, when she got a lot of comments for one of her many interesting and informative status updates.

You can sort out Facebook conversations based on sentiment, mood or by topical interest like travel, career, moving, or car.  Based on the data analysis of the Wisdom app , folks in my stream are going to Sydney, London, and Mexico, which is kind of cool to know.

You also receive insights about your Facebook connections.  According to my demographic profile, 69% of my Facebook friends are married, 40% are female and 67% are younger than me.  You can also see the people you interact with the most; Frank Gruber is in my top 10 list – must be all the Tech Cocktail news that I keep liking.

You can also view interests you share with your Facebook friends, so in the category “books,” my network has CC Chapman among the top 10 for Content Rules, the book he co-authored with Ann Handley.  My Facebook friends like Busboys and Poets, Co Co Sala, Georgetown Cupcake, Subway and Ruby Tuesday, and they watch The Daily Show, The Office, Mad Men and House (I don’t watch any of them).

I have not come across any other app that has provided me with this kind of drill-down into my social stream, so I really appreciate this app and enjoy using it.

On Friday September 9th, Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, mentioned two other iPhone apps they have for Facebook: Alert and Emma. Alert lets you follow streams of brands or personalities, and Emma allows you to conduct transactions with your Facebook network. Since I am an Android guy, I could not review these apps. We would love to hear your take on Wisdom, as Monika’s take was diametrically opposed to Shashi’s, at least from a user experience. When Monika tried out Wisdom she was not impressed  as status updates are laid out in what amounts to a spreadsheet format, so it’s not that pretty too look at – what is supposed to be an engaging experience gets turned into data. She tried to click on status updates which went nowhere, so that really ticked her off – until she realized it’s not fully functional for up to 24 hours after you load it into Facebook. Doh!  So definitely leave us a comment below.
