Intel Capital Invests In Six Mobile Startups at MWC

In the shadows of a Microsoft and Nokia partnership which some think caught Intel off guard in their own alliance with Nokia, Intel Capital announced investments in six mobile companies totaling $26 Million at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The investments focus on driving innovation in mobile hardware, software and apps ecosystems. The six companies each have developed innovative technologies to enhance the user experience across a number of devices including handhelds, tablets and laptops, that run a variety of operating systems including MeeGo and Android.

The following six companies received investments:

Borqs Ltd. (Borqs) a Beijing based Android software integrator for mobile devices.

CloudMade a Menlo Park, California company that enables developers to build location-enabled applications and services.

Kaltura a New York based provider of a widely adopted open source online video platform.

InVisage Technologies, Inc. a Menlo Park, California based custom-designed semiconductor materials developer and the makers of the world’s first commercial quantum dot-based material for image sensors.

SecureKey Technologies, Inc. a Toronto based designer of hardware and software solutions to enable the strong cryptographic capabilities of debit, credit and identity smartcards — including those within Near Field Communication-based phones — for online authentication and online purchases.

VisionOSS Solutions a Reading, UK provider of a unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) service delivery and management platform to service providers and large enterprise customers that are planning to, or have already launched, complex, multi-cluster IP-PBX and UC&C architectures.

Disclosure: I am part of the “Intel Advisor” program and am compensated and/or receive other value from Intel to attend events on their behalf. Through the program I was privvy to involvement in today’s announcement.
