Josh Williams on Designing Something Meaningful in Gowalla

Location based services have been hot for a few years now, motivating people to check-in to collect a badge or other virtual good and compete with others. One of the leaders in the space is Gowalla, an Austin based startup led by founder and CEO Josh Williams. Josh is an entrepreneur who has had other successes, but when he brought Gowalla to life he was looking to inspire and motivate people to go out, see the world and collect virtual badges for their virtual passport while doing it. I am a big fan of the Gowalla iPhone application as it lets you easily check-in and share those check-ins with Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. This consolidation is brilliant as it is difficult to check into all these various applications separately, yet we often do want to share that information.

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Josh Williams while at South By Southwest and he shared some advice for anyone looking to startup and do something in the business world. He also explained how he is looking to build something meaningful in Gowalla. Watch his video interview as part of the Tech Cocktail Delivering Happiness at SXSW interview series.
