Luxury Custom Goods Marketplace CustomMade Lands $2.1 Million in Funding

December 2, 2011

CustomMade

CustomMade, a Boston-based online marketplace, just raised a nice $2.1 million in Series A funding – a nice holiday gift for the startup, whose platform connects shoppers with artisans who create handmade luxury custom goods.  The funding will be used to expand the CustomMade team and its operations.

If Etsy is Anthropologie – or a well-curated flea market in a nice part of town – then CustomMade is Neiman Marcus. I took a look around the site and was blown away by the variety of items available.  I found a $45,000 outdoor metal sculpture I really like and a super luxe $600 leather-and-silver dog collar.  Too bad I don’t have a dog.

You can also request quotes for custom projects (though it does look like many of the craftspeople are already open to requests).  If you are one of the starry-eyed startup founders with a creative holiday wish list that our own Glen Hellman just wrote about, you’ll have fun browsing this site.

The funding was led by First Round Capital and Google Ventures with participation from Founder Collective, Launch Capital, NextView Ventures, Andrew McCollum (co-founder of Facebook), and David Tisch (of TechStars New York City), among others.

Monika, do you really think you should be wearing a $6000 Silver dog Collar? How much is the gold one?
