Spring training is in full swing with the first televised pre-season games taking place this weekend. The World Champion San Francisco Giants kicked things off on Friday with a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. And just in time to get things underway, Major League Baseball has launched the latest version of their app MLB At Bat 11 and it is already topping the iTunes app charts.
The application has both an iPhone/iPod and iPad version and enables users to tune into every game from anywhere. This includes up to the minute stats, live game center and box scores. If you are an MLB.TV subscriber which is $119 for the season, then the application also streams the live video feed of games to your device. The app will feature a free MLB.TV live streaming preview with 150 Spring Training games. After that, you have top subscribe to MLB.TV to stream all the live games. So if you are a baseball fan, the MLB At Bat app is a must have! The application costs $14.99 for both iPhone and iPad for the 2011 season which includes hundreds of games. MLB is one of the first to create their own successful subscription model as the application stops updating after the 2011 World Series, and avid fans will likely re-subscribe each season.

Some fans might think the pricing for MLB.TV and the apps is a little steep and we’d agree; it is kind of clunky that you have to buy 2 separate apps and a streaming video subscription. But the bottom line is that it’s a small price to pay to have the games we love streamed to all of our devices. Though, it would be nice to see the iPhone and iPad apps thrown in for free to any MLB.TV subscribers.
