The Melt Brings Custom Grilled Cheese Sandwiches To Your Mobile Fingertips

June 2, 2011

The Melt

Mobile apps are taking over the world.  We are covering more and more of them here at Tech Cocktail, and they all seem to be amazingly clever and useful.  And now they are arriving in a big way on the restaurant scene.

At yesterday’s Wall Street Journal-sponsored D: All Things Digital Conference, Flip Video founder Jonathan Kaplan announced his next venture, The Melt, a casual restaurant that will feature the all-American favorite, grilled cheese sandwiches that he expects to quickly expand nationwide.

What makes this restaurant interesting isn’t the grilled cheese, though, it’s the technology behind the ordering.  Using location-based mobile technology, you will be able to remotely order food from your computers or mobile phone.  Once you order is placed, you’ll receive a QR code that can be scanned at any restaurant location, thus allowing you to pay through your phone and pick up your order within minutes.

There’s also a social good angle, which is great.  Once the concept launches, they will introduce a “round up” philanthropic program.  It will enable you to “round up” the total of your purchase (i.e., a $5.75 purchase can be rounded up to $6.00), and the additional amount ($.25) will be donated to charitable organizations dedicated to fighting hunger.  Staff members at each restaurant location will choose a charitable organization in its neighborhood to donate to.

If you’re a big foodie, it’s worth noting that chef and restaurateur, Michael Mina, is on the board of directors.  With him advising on the menu, now you know food is going to be great. You might find it interesting that this new venture has secured $10 million dollars in funding from Sequoia Capital. Yes, that is correct a grill cheese sandwich restaurant and app concept just got funded by Sequoia.
