My Local Text Sends Local Deals to Your Mobile

Within the last year there has been growing popularity of location based services (LBS) and advertising like Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp. There has also been a push toward hyper-local advertising and some believe that it’s the future of advertising.

My Local Text, a service from Washington D.C. based Infield Communications, has a different approach to LBS. Rather then relying on check-in data to deliver deals to you, My Local Text uses your zip code to tailor deals to your specific location. And, as you may have guessed, the offers are sent by text message.

The deals that My Local Text offers fall into two categories: restaurants and arts venues such as theaters, music halls and art spaces. Users can choose to sign up for one or both categories and will receive two texts per week from each category. For now the offers are only for DC but will be expanding to Northern Virginia and Bethesda, Maryland soon.

The advantage My Local Text has over other services is the low barrier to entry. No smartphone needed; any phone that can receive text messages will do. If My Local Texts can offer a wide range of interesting and money-saving deals, this service could grow very rapidly. My Local Text will be demoing at TECH cocktail DC 8.
