When adults try to encourage certain habits or behavior in kids, it’s natural to look for methods that are fun and engaging. In an effort to turn reading into a fun and lifelong habit, Pocket Tales will offer online social reading games for kids 7 -12 years old.
Readers, or players, will start by developing an online customized”bookshelf,” joining a social network, and taking quizzes about books they’ve read. Gaming elements come into play when they pass the quizzes, rate books, and recommend books to friends. As participants read more, they will unlock additional games and earn points as they compete with friends in their social network.

The pages shown here are early mock-ups. The project will be launched at the 2010 SXSW Accelerator, where Pocket Tales is a finalist. The company is based in Indianapolis, and its founders, Brennan Knots and Yaw Aning, are alumni of the Gov. Bob Orr Indiana Entrepreneurial Fellowship. Pocket Tales will be one of the many startups showcased at the TECH cocktail SXSW: Blackout Sunday event, presented by Microsoft BizSpark and Volusion.
