We’ve seen a number of companies jumping into the hybrid automobile market, the most recent is luxury sports car maker Porsche with the creation of the Porsche 918 Hybrid. The vehicle is one of three Porsche models with a hybrid drive that made their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The two-seat, high-performance 918 Spyder sports car showcases the new hybrid drive technology. It’s said to have 718 horsepower and an estimated fuel economy of more than 78 mpg.
The vehicle offers drivers a few choices. At the press of a button on the steering wheel the driver can choose among four different running modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles, vs the Hybrid mode which uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine as a function of driving conditions and requirements, offering a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the way to extra-powerful.
These vehicles are going be sold in limited quantities on a first come, first serve basis. They will begin manufacturing them in September 2013, starting at $845,000. While you might be saving gas and making a conscience decision for the environment, if you are looking for a more practical choice be on the lookout for the Porsche 911 Turbo S Hybrid or the Cayenne S SUV Hybrid too.
