Security Trends for 2011

‘Tis the season for top 10 lists, yet not all are cheery and bright. In light of the hacking of Gawker Media’s servers that lead to a confirmed attack at Twitter, it’s worth looking at predictions  regarding security trends in 2011.

Panda Security, a Cloud Security Company located in Orlando, FL, has predicted several ‘radical innovations in cyber-crime’ for 2011.

“Hacktivism and cyber-war;  more profit-oriented malware;  social media;  social engineering and malicious codes with the ability to adapt to avoid detection will be the main threats in the coming year. There will also be an increase in the threats to Mac users, new efforts to attack 64-bit systems and zero-day exploits.”

Imperva, another Cloud Security Company published a list of predictions as well, and forecasts vulnerabilities in the area of mobile technology as devices interact with corporate networks:

“The threat landscape will evolve in many directions, making data security more challenging than ever,” said Imperva CTO Amichai Schulman. “The biggest potential impact will be caused by the proliferation of sophisticated mobile devices interacting with corporate networks. I believe that next year will bring the first major data breaches as a result of compromised devices.”
