Manage Your Medical Bills While Helping Charities with Simplee

Simplee, a platform for tracking and paying health care bills, recently launched a fundraising program to benefit medical nonprofits.

For every user who signs up for Simplee, the company makes a donation to a nonprofit focusing on a chronic condition like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer. Their first fundraiser benefits the Melanoma Research Foundation in its fight against melanoma, a skin cancer that struck 63,000 Americans in 2009. Simplee has raised hundreds of dollars so far.

Simplee’s core business, which we covered previously, was a response to cofounder Tomer Shoval’s bought of the flu in Mexico, and the headaches caused by the bought of paperwork that followed. Simplee cites that patient premiums and out-of-pocket expenses have increased by over 50 percent in the last 5 years – which means more bills to manage and pay.

Free for users, Simplee’s HIPAA-compliant platform tracks expenses by integrating with your health insurance account. It also lets you make payments and sends alerts for potential wrong charges and unused free services, like dentist visits.

“Simplee is the ‘Mint for health care,’” says Aaron Ginn, Simplee’s community developer. Though not disclosing user numbers, he reports that Simplee is managing more than $100 million in medical bills. Founded in September 2010, Simplee raised $1.8 million in seed funding from Greylock, Embarcadero Ventures, and angels.

Compared to competitors Quicken Health and Cake Health, Simplee aims to translate medical bills into laymen’s terms, like explaining why you owe your doctor $112. The Palo Alto-based startup makes money from payment processing fees and working with employers who offer health insurance.
