TECH cocktail Champaign: TC at the Birthplace of the Modern Web

by Eric Olson on September 9, 2008

It’s about time we put on a TECH cocktail event in Champaign, IL.  The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), for those who don’t know, is arguably the birthplace of the modern web.  Mosaic (netscape), TCP/IP, apache and various other internet technologies we take for granted were pioneered at UIUC.  Also, the founders of PayPal, YouTube, Netscape and other top web companies are UIUC alums. UIUC is certainly a tech hub and arguably has the best technology program in the country.

Frank and I are excited to bring TECH cocktail to Champaign and to show off six new companies from the area that range from web based ventures to self healing polymers.  If Champaign goes well Frank and I may start thinking more seriously about a Big 10 edition of TECH cocktail that goes to places like Champaign, Ann Arbor and Madison.

If you are in Chicago and want to come to this I would encourage it.  If there are enough of you we can perhaps even get a tour of campus and the labs (Siebel Center for Computer Science, etc.) before the event.  If you work in the web or IT (or any technology space) visiting UIUC is a pilgrimage you need to make.

It should also be noted, “Engineers w/o Borders (www.ewb-usa.org)” will be hosting their Fall workshop a UofI, Champaign, that same weekend. http://www.ewb-usa.org/events.php?ID=41
