Tesla Model S Beta Revealed

October 1, 2011

Tesla Model S Alpha and Roadster

We have been keeping our eye on Tesla, the creation of serial entrepreneur Elon Musk, as they look to rethink the automobile from Silicon Valley. Tesla’s latest creation, the Model S, is an all-electric, four-door, zero-emission automobile that can hold up to seven passengers. Today, Tesla held a special Beta Reveal event at its Fremont, California headquarters for several thousand reservation holders with the new automobile set to go on sale in mid-2012. Attendees got a chance to take a peak at the Tesla Motors factory, which looked cleaner than an Apple Store. They also got to hear from Elon Musk himself as he revealed the Model S. The event coincided with the launch of the new Tesla Motors website.

The vehicle is supposed to go zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds, have a 120 mile-per-hour top speed, and a battery-powered range of 160 miles at minimum in the base model. The signature model will be a tad faster with zero to 60 miles per hour in under 4.0 seconds with a 300 mile range.

Musk said on the speediness of the Model S:

“That’s quicker than a 911 (Porsche Carrera). Not bad for an electric luxury sedan.”

The car will be priced around $57,400 with a pair of souped-up models with extra battery capacity priced at $67,000 and $77,000.

I’d love to get my hands on one and I can only imagine the thousand or so in attendance today at the Tesla Model S Beta Reveal event were ready to put rubber to the road.

  1. Pretty sure the top speed is electronically limited to 130mph. I can't seem to access the website to confirm, but you might want to check on that.

Pretty sure I saw Ashton driving in one of these on the last episode of Two and a Half Men! I think the model S looks better than the roadster. Would love to test drive one of these.

It's a beautifully executed exterior design (I saw the early prototype when it made a tour stop in Seattle earlier this summer) and I can't wait to see the actual, production interior. If Tesla's true to form, the top end is far less of a selling point than 0-60 grunt, reasonable range options, and all-around handling.

Sweeeeeet. Guess we need to add electricity costs to our Cost2Drive app so we can include the Tesla

Combination of Brilliant design and incredible performance, is the exact definition of Tesla model-s electric car. Its lithium-ion battery pack allows this machine to run 160 miles, is unbelievable.

Absolutely this is one of best Tesla's model available in the market. It goes on road like a rocket, with an acceleration of 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds. It offers an excellent mileage of 160 miles with a single lithium-ion battery, and its top speed is 120 mph.The interior and the exterior look of Tesla is awesome.
