WildChords: Guitar Hero For a Real Guitar – On an iPad

November 30, 2011

Ovelin

Finnish-based startup Ovelin has developed an iPad app called WildChords that sounds like a fun way to learn an instrument – especially if you were thinking of adding that to your list of New Year’s resolutions.

Of the company’s 3 founders, 2 used to play guitar and one still does.  Their goal is to make learning to play the guitar fun, addictive and motivating – and it is played with a real guitar (no additional equipment needed).   And yes, they do make learning fun: you hypnotize animals in the app by playing chords, like a digital Pied Piper of Hamelin.

This family friendly game, which is suitable for beginners and intermediates of all ages, was chosen as Best European Learning Game 2011.  If this catches on, maybe it’ll help combat these sad statistics: out of all the people that start playing a music instrument, 85% quit before they reach a reasonable level, while 82% of people who would like to learn lack the motivation to start.

Since it’s not on the market in the US yet, you can try it out for yourself at our Tech Cocktail San Francisco mixer tonight, where the Ovelin team will be demoing WildChords.

My friend knows a little about this but I am just amazed that you have to invent some devices just to make playing the guitar more incredible!!!

Actually the app is already available for the iPad, and available in the US app store for free!

  3. And for those serious about the endeavor, I recommend Rocksmith for Xbox360 and other gaming consoles.

This is mostly geared for children, which is great. Bringing kids into the mobile music education space is key.

Wow, I can't believe it's free. I love learning games, and this one will be used by my son :)
